Anti-botnet firm FireEye has raised $14.5 million in their latest (3rd) round of funding, bringing the total to a staggering $34.5 million. The company was founded in 2004 and is focused on protecting both consumers and businesses from malicious botnets. While some may argue (and we are in that camp) that botnet-specific protection should fall to the traditional anti-virus/anti-malware camps to solve, FireEye founder and CEO Ashar Aziz sees things somewhat differently, positioning his company’s technology as a complementary part of the anti-virus defense. This C Round, led by DAG Ventures managed to entice Juniper Networks, JAFCO Ventures, SVB Capital, Norwest Venture Partners and Sequoia Capital to jump on the bus. And where will this money go? According to the press release , it will be used to expand the sales and marketing efforts, along with some percentage going to R&D efforts. Let’s hope they get picked up soon and rolled into a broader, more commodity offering so that we won’t be tempted to deploy yet another appliance at our perimeter.
