Feature or Product?

I have had a number of discussions with vendors, buyers, and VCs about the whole Data Classification and Protection space (what some other analysts have dubbed the 'Extrusion Protection' market). What strikes me most about the companies fielding products is their incompleteness.

Initially, my concerns we about structured versus unstructured data. It seemed that some companies chose to tackle either one or the other, but never both. The concerns about those opting for the structured data space was primarly around what database platforms were supported. Similarly, I was always curious about what and how many file types were supported by the unstructured data folks.

A number of months ago, I decided this was a moot point. Neither camp seemed to offer a complete solution becasue each was ignoring or downplaying the other. Simultaneously, I began wondering if these offerings should just be features of a broader protection strategy. What I mean is, did they belong as standalone products, or were they better serving teh market by being "baked into" offerings by other vendors? To tell the truth, as interesting as the market is/was, I ended up leaning very strongly toward the fact that these products should be a part of somethign larger. Much larger in many cases.

I think my hypothesis is slowly being proven. It started with Vontu's agreement with Symantec to embed part of their technology into its SMS 8300 appliance to detect sensitive information leaving via e-mail. It was further underscored by the recent acquisition of Tablus by RSA (I wish the best of luck to Todd Graham, Tablus Chief Scientist, on this one). The rumors around SYMC picking up Vontu have been swirling since this time last year, but I think the price just went up due to the Tablus deal.

Rest assured, we'll be keeping or eyes on this space. Especially as I prepare for my panel discussion on the topic for the ASIS International event in Las Vegas later this month (check out the event calendar for details).
