Francine McKenna of re:The Auditors blog has a very interesting post about what the board's role is when internal audit is impotent. http://www.retheauditors.com/2008/09/when-internal-audit-is-impotent-or.html In my experience, her analysis is correct. Even though Internal Audit and External Audit may meet independently with the board, some boards are comprised of people who do not have the time or interest to effectively monitor what is happening with the internal controls at a company. This is a reason why its important to know how many other boards a board member at your company (or a company you invest in) serves on. If you have a director who is serving on several boards, how much time will them be spending on this monitoring and oversight function? What do you think? Recommend this article... Join me on Sept. 10th as I make my debut as a Faculty Member for the Information Security Compliance And Risk Management Institute in Seattle, WA, graciously hosted by the University of Washington. It promises to be an interesting event as the mission of the Institute is to bring IT and information security professionals, attorneys and auditors together with concerned academics and public officials for two days of discussion and advanced learning about the arts, sciences and laws of electronic information and IT use and protection. More info on this event can be found here. From there, I hop a red eye down to SecureWorldExpo - Bay Area where I team up with JJ Thompson, Partner at Rook Consulting and a powerhouse of knowledge and practice, to bring you "Building Your Very Own Robot Army: Practical Audit Cost Savings Through Compliance Automation", an entertaining and thought provoking session on squeezing money out of the audit cycle. JJ and I will also be on the expo floor for any follow-up discussions that spill over from our session, so be sure to come visit us. Once again, if any friends and colleagues want to get together in either city, the first round is always on me. Recommend this article... In a move that continues to surprise us, VARs and boutique consulting shops in the infosec and GRC space are getting funded. Most recently, Accuvant picked up an undisclosed sum from Sverica International, LLC. This follows on our coverage regarding Midwest up-and-comer Fishnet [article here], and virtual unknown, Digital Forensics Professionals [article here], providing more datapoints in an interesting trend. Is the venture community really this eager to put their money to work that will spoonfeed the channels? Recommend this article...
