SourceFire Sidesteps Generous Offer From Barracuda

No Comments 02 June 2008

Despite being a 13% premium over the May23rd closing price, at $7.50 per share, SourceFire declined Barracuda Networks unsolicited offer on May 30th. Interestingly, Barracuda is currently entangled in a patent dispute with Trend Micro over how they have implemented the open source anti-virus software ClamAV . The interesting thing to note here is that SourceFire acquired ClamAV in August of 2007. Is this unsolicited bid an attempt to short circuit the Trend Micro debacle? Either way, it looks like SourceFire pulled it out of the wreckage by gapping up from $6.63 on Thursday the 29th to an opening price of $7.56 on Friday the 30th. The march upwards continues this morning with FIRE shares headed towards $7.75 as of 10:45EDT.
