20% of IT Budgets Spent on Security

0 Comments 09 October 2007

Security accounted for 20% of technology spending last year and it's expected to rise, according to a report released Tuesday by the Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA).  CompTIA surveyed 1,070 organizations and found that on average, they spent one-fifth of their technology budgets on security-related spending in 2006.

That's up from the 15% percent of IT budgets spent on security in 2005, and the 12% spent in 2004.   According to CompTIA, antivirus software, firewalls, and proxy servers hold the top slots for security enforcement technologies.  It's no secret that the antivirus and firewall markets are saturated, and have been for some time.  I'd like to know what the survey said about identity management.  According to the Deloitte's 2007 Global Security Survey, 50% of organizations surveyed listed "access and identity management" as their top initiative.  However, respondents to the survey totaled 169 major global financial institutions (what's the matter Deloitte, don't you know any energy or retail companies you can include?  Geez!).  So, who really knows what the average IT shop is going to spend, and on what?
